Production of new Opel Astra officially launched

General Motors Manufacturing Poland has officially started production of the new fifth generation Opel Astra, the media reported.

On Tuesday, September 29, the car was presented at this year’s International Motor show in Frankfurt.

The Opel plant currently employs some 3,900 people. General Motors hopes to produce 170,000 vehicles this year and sustain the annual sales volume next year. The Gliwice-based plant will be the general producer of the new model in hatchback version, estate cars will be manufactured in Ellesmere Port, in the UK.

The arrangements for the launching of production took two years and cost around €150 million, Andrzej Korpak, the general director at General Motors Poland informed.

The factory produces the Opel Astra and Opel Cascada models. General Motors has been present in Poland since 1994, when it began assembly of Astra cars.
